Monte Albán was founded around 500 BC and became the capital of the Zapotec civilization. It reached its peak between 200 BC and 600 AD, when it was one of the most important cultural centers in Mesoamerica. Monte Albán has produced important archaeological finds, including hieroglyphic inscriptions, pottery, jewelry, and tombs that provide insight into Zapotec society, religion, and government. After a 1-hour walk, we will see a marvel of nature and history, the petrified waterfalls of "Hierve el Agua," a striking setting with sulfurous waters characterized by their white color and immensity (they measure more than 200 meters in height). They were formed millions of years ago by carbonated water runoff, originating in the springs located in the cliff's climate.
Hierve el Agua is another notable site in Oaxaca, Mexico, known for its impressive rock formations and hot springs. The most characteristic feature of Hierve el Agua are its petrified rock formations, which resemble white waterfalls. These waterfalls are calcium carbonate deposits that formed over millennia by the flow of mineral-rich water from the springs.
This site was important to the region's pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures and is believed to have been used ritually due to the presence of pre-Hispanic terraces near the waterfalls.
On our way back, we will stop for lunch at a buffet-style restaurant to sample regional dishes (food not included). We will end by visiting the handicraft museum, located a few blocks from the main square, for souvenir shopping. Return to the hotel and overnight stay.
